Lily Lake Storage Project
Project Overview
The Lily Lake Storage Project is a 10 MW / 80 MWh battery energy storage facility located at 277 Lilly Lake Road, Selwyn, ON K9J 6X4. The project is designed to support the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) in achieving its target of acquiring 1,600 MW of new capacity by 2029, addressing the anticipated capacity shortfall in the region.
Powering Ontario’s Future
Electricity supply is expected to be reduced in the near term due to the refurbishment of nuclear generation plants, while demand is rising due to population growth, economic expansion, and the electrification of certain industries and vehicles. In response, the IESO has initiated the Long-Term 2 Request for Proposals (LTR2 RFP) to secure new electricity and storage resources. LTR2 targets the procurement of 600 MW of year-round capacity service from newly built resources larger than 1 MW capable of delivering electricity for at least eight consecutive hours.
The Lily Lake BESS facility will play a key role in supporting Ontario’s electricity grid by:
- Balancing electricity demand by charging when demand is low and dispatching energy when demand is high.
- Supporting overall grid stability.
- Reducing costs for ratepayers by minimizing reliance on natural gas and discharging energy during peak demand periods.
- Promoting sustainability and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
- Providing an alternative to building new transmission lines.
By combining reliability, cost-efficiency, and environmental benefits, the Lily Lake Storage Project represents a critical step toward a more sustainable and resilient electricity system in Ontario.
Project Details
- Capacity: 10 MW / 80 MWh AC
- Address: 277 Lilly Lake Road, Selwyn, ON K9J 6X4
- Project Footprint: 0.5 to 1 acre
- Technology: Lithium-Ion Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)
- Status: Planning
- Interconnection: Local Distribution 44 kV line
- Components: The BESS consists of 20–40 modular, outdoor-rated enclosures roughly the size of a shipping container, each housing thousands of batteries. Major equipment also includes medium voltage transformers and inverters.
- Safety: The battery energy storage system is designed with multiple hardware and software safety features to prevent system errors and contain fires. BESS technology is very safe, with a very low risk of fire or explosion, and all systems are rigorously tested to ensure operational safety.

Environmental & Economic Benefits
The Lily Lake Storage Project delivers lasting value to the local community and Ontario’s electricity system. It supports the economy, creates jobs, and strengthens the grid while helping reduce emissions.
- Long-Term Tax Revenue
- Reliable contributions to the Municipality’s tax base with minimal demand on local services.
- Local Employment
- Job creation for local workers, contractors, and suppliers during development, construction, and operations (e.g., surveying, geotechnical work, concrete and aggregate supply, equipment installation, and maintenance).
- Boost to the Local Economy
- Preference for local services, materials, and contractors. Workers may also require local accommodations and services, while landowners benefit from stable, long-term income.
- Reducing Emissions
- Stores excess renewable energy to displace natural gas generation, helping to cut Ontario’s emissions and support clean energy growth.
- Resilient Electricity Supply
- BESS draws power during off-peak hours and releases it when demand is high. It can also provide backup power during outages, protecting critical infrastructure like hospitals.
- Local Grid Stabilization
- Rapid response to voltage and frequency changes, keeping the grid stable by balancing energy supply and demand.
