Overview

We are currently looking for a Project Engineer to support the design and engineering of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects from feasibility through to completion. The ideal candidate will have experience across all project phases—including development, construction, and operations.

What You Will Do

  • Develop technical designs for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), including site layouts, design packages, single-line diagrams (SLDs), system sizing, and electrical modeling, ensuring alignment with both performance and financial objectives.
  • Optimize BESS designs through cross-functional collaboration to achieve the lowest levelized cost of energy (LCOE)
  • Support regulatory and permitting processes and help resolve technical issues to ensure compliance with applicable development and permitting requirements for renewable energy projects.
  • Prepare detailed cost estimates, perform site visits, and conduct engineering reviews and calculations, including cable/equipment sizing, transformers, switchgear, and grounding transformers.
  • Provide technical input during project execution, assist with troubleshooting, and manage design changes as needed.
  • Conduct technical due diligence for independent engineering reviews and project financing efforts.
  • Collaborate with suppliers and EPC partners on equipment selection and system integration.
  • Ensure all project work adheres to relevant industry and regulatory standards.
  • Support critical phases of the project, such as testing and commissioning.
  • Assist with the interconnection application process, ensuring timely and accurate submissions.
  • Respond to pre-design technical queries from EPC contractors and the owner’s engineers.
  • Create, maintain, and update technical specifications, design criteria, standards, and technical exhibits.
  • Provide technical support for Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), EPC RFPs, and supply agreements related to BESS projects.
  • Develop strong relationships with BESS integrators and vendors to support successful project execution.
  • Manage and maintain comprehensive project documentation, including drawings, specifications, and compliance records.

What You Will Bring:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering with a P. Eng. designation (or eligibility to obtain in Ontario)
  • 3–5 years of experience in electrical engineering, with at least 1–2 years on BESS or renewable energy projects
  • Minimum 1 year of Canadian work experience in an engineering capacity
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and basic electrical design tools
  • Familiarity with interconnection processes and utility standards (e.g., CSA, NEC, IEEE)
  • Strong technical writing and documentation skills
  • Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Willingness to travel for site visits or commissioning support as needed

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior BESS engineering experience in North America, ideally with exposure to Ontario’s regulatory landscape (e.g., IESO)
  • Experience managing the Engineering scope of projects through all phases: development, construction, and operations
  • Proficiency in advanced electrical modeling tools (e.g., ETAP, PSCAD)
  • Understanding of PPA structures, EPC RFPs, Interconnection, and technical components of project financing and due diligence
  • Knowledge of SCADA integration, protection schemes, and system-level optimization
  • Strong relationships with BESS vendors, integrators, or EPCs
  • Experience preparing or supporting regulatory permits and compliance documentation
  • PMP certification or demonstrated experience in formal project management practices
  • 3-5+ years of engineering experience in the renewables or energy storage sector
