Position Overview

This co-op offers hands-on experience at the intersection of business, data, and technology within Nexus Energy. You will support teams across Settlements, Accounting, Sales, and Trading by analyzing data, improving processes, and developing solutions using MySQL, Python, and automation. As a key project, you will develop an energy market forecasting model using real-world data, gaining practical experience in forecasting and energy market applications.

What You Will Do

  • Serve as a bridge between the IT team and business users across Settlements, Accounting, Sales, and Trading.
  • Gather, clarify, document, and prioritize business and technical requirements for backend requests, system enhancements, reports, and data investigations.
  • Use MySQL to retrieve, validate, reconcile, and analyze operational and financial data.
  • Develop Python scripts and tools to automate recurring tasks, data checks, reporting workflows, and file-processing activities.
  • Investigate data discrepancies and system issues, identify root causes, and work with team members to implement practical solutions.
  • Support daily and ad hoc requests involving data extraction, database updates, reporting, troubleshooting, and internal applications.
  • Assist with testing system changes, including preparing test cases, validating results, documenting defects, and supporting user acceptance testing.
  • Create and maintain process documentation, data definitions, business requirements, and user guides.
  • Help improve data quality, operational controls, and the reliability of business-critical workflows.
  • Communicate progress, findings, risks, and recommendations clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Handle sensitive business and financial information with accuracy, care, and confidentiality.

Key Internship Project

During the internship, you will develop a forecasting model for a predefined energy market rate. With guidance from business and technical stakeholders, you will:

  • Translate the established business objective into data and modeling requirements.
  • Collect, clean, validate, and explore relevant historical market data.
  • Analyze trends, seasonality, and other potential market drivers.
  • Develop and compare forecasting approaches.
  • Backtest the model and evaluate its performance using appropriate accuracy metrics.
  • Create a repeatable process for updating forecasts as new data becomes available.
  • Document the methodology, assumptions, limitations, and data requirements.
  • Present the model, findings, and recommendations to stakeholders at the end of the term.

What You Will Bring

Minimum Skills & Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a university or college program in Business Analytics, Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Finance, Economics, or a related field.
  • Working knowledge of MySQL, including joins, aggregations, subqueries, and data validation.
  • Working knowledge of Python for data analysis and automation.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to translate business questions into clear data or system requirements.
  • High attention to detail and a commitment to data accuracy.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple requests, organize priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Self-motivated, adaptable, and eager to learn unfamiliar business processes and technologies.
  • Comfortable working collaboratively with both technical teams and business users.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with forecasting, time-series analysis, statistics, or machine learning.
  • Familiarity with Git, APIs, ETL processes, cloud platforms, or software development practices.
  • Familiarity with the North American energy market is considered an asset but is not required.
